How to Identify a Research Problem: Examples and a Simple Template

What a research problem is

A research problem is a specific gap, contradiction or unresolved issue that your study sets out to address. It is narrower than a topic and comes before your questions.

Where problems come from

Gaps (nothing studied yet), contradictions (studies disagree), new contexts (a known effect in a new setting), and practical problems reported by organisations.

A simple problem-statement template

“Although [what is known], little is known about [the gap] in [context]. This matters because [consequence]. This study therefore examines [aim].”

Example

“Although flexible working is linked to higher job satisfaction, little is known about its effect on early-career teachers in UK secondary schools. This matters because retention is falling. This study examines…”

Check it

A good problem is specific, evidenced with citations, significant, and researchable with the time and data you have.
