Lecture Planning Guide: How to Plan and Deliver a Great University Lecture

Start with learning outcomes

Write 2–4 outcomes using action verbs (explain, compare, apply, evaluate). Every slide and activity should serve one of them.

A simple 50-minute structure

Hook and outcomes (5 min) → three content chunks of 10–12 minutes, each followed by a short activity → summary and preview (5 min).

Active learning

Use quick polls, think-pair-share, worked examples and short problem tasks to keep attention and check understanding.

Slides that teach

One idea per slide, minimal text, clear visuals, and references on the slide or in notes. Share slides in advance for accessibility.

Close the loop

Link the lecture to seminars and assessment, collect quick feedback, and adjust the next session.
