How UK essays are graded
Most UK universities use bands: First (70+), 2:1 (60–69), 2:2 (50–59) and Third (40–49). Higher bands reward critical evaluation, a clear argument and wide, well-used reading.
What separates a 2:1 from a First
A First does not just describe sources — it compares them, questions methods and builds an original, well-supported argument that answers the exact question.
Structure
Introduction with a clear thesis, body paragraphs that each make one argued point, and a conclusion that answers the question. Follow the word count closely — usually within ±10%.
Harvard referencing basics
In text: (Author, Year) or (Author, Year, p. X) for quotes. Reference list alphabetical by author with full details. Be consistent with your university’s version.
Academic integrity
UK universities use Turnitin and AI-detection, and buying essays is illegal to advertise in the UK. Use tutoring and feedback to improve your own work.
